a true gem

i live with a seven year old girl,
who is quite amazing and such a joy.
yesterday, she saw my tattoo
for the first time and asked why.
thinking she was too young to 'get it'
i simply said, "cause i like paperclips."
she responded, "i'll need a better reason than that!"
so here it is:
i need a constant reminder to be flexible in life.
to allow movement.
to give way to change.
to bend like the trees.
why? because it is the only way to be productive.
it is the only way to grow and serve out a purpose.
the paperclip, to me, is a pure example of this.
the bend gives it purpose - to hold things together.
plus, it's a pretty damn cool design.
i really do just like it.

(wo)man in the mirror
no matter where i am
if Man in the Mirror comes on
you will find me dancing
with my arms in the air,
my eyes closed and with tears.
it is this song that first got me to think
about change. the kind i can make.
MJ helped me see clearer
and i am forever thankful.
I'm Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It's Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .
As I, Turn Up The Collar On My Favourite Winter Coat
This Wind Is Blowin' My Mind
I See The Kids In The Street, With Not Enough To Eat
Who Am I, To Be Blind?
Pretending Not To See Their Needs
A Summer's Disregard, A Broken Bottle Top
And A One Man's Soul
They Follow Each Other On The Wind Ya' Know
'Cause They Got Nowhere To Go
That's Why I Want You To Know
I'm Starting With The (wo)Man In The Mirror
I'm Asking Him To Change His Ways
And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change
I've Been A Victim Of A Selfish Kind Of Love
It's Time That I Realize
That There Are Some With No Home,
Not A Nickel To Loan
Could It Be Really Me,
Pretending That They're Not Alone?
A Willow Deeply Scarred,
Somebody's Broken Heart
And A Washed-Out Dream
They Follow The Pattern Of The Wind, Ya' See
Cause They Got No Place To Be
That's Why I'm Starting With Me
I'm Starting With The (wo)Man In The Mirror,
I'm Asking Him To Change His Ways
No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself And Then Make The Change
You Gotta Get It Right, While You Got The Time
'Cause When You Close Your Heart
You Can't Close Your . . .Your Mind!
I'm Gonna Make A Change
It's Gonna Feel Real Good!
Come On!
Just Lift Yourself
You Know
You've Got To Stop It.
Yourself!
You've Got To Move!
Come On! Come On!
You Got To . . .
Stand Up! Stand Up! Stand Up!
Stand Up And Lift Yourself, Now!
You Know It!
You Know It!
You Know It!
Make That Change.

A-E-A-O, A-EE-A-O...
my favorite radio station in LA
The Sound 100.3
does something every morning called the 10 at 10:
ten songs from one year or one theme.
today's year was 1993. the hour was filled with
radiohead, cranberries and counting crows.
i realized being 12 was a good time for music
(even though i really didn't discover it until about 1997...
i grew up on r&b and hiphop.)
one song really stuck out -
the return to innocence by enigma
Don't care what people say
Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to innocence
i will be humming the chant for the rest of the day.
btw - the chanting is an aboriginal Taiwanese song
and the drum beat is a Zeppelin sample.

you don't say?!
so i wrote down these words on a piece of paper
that i have been carrying around for about two years now...
i read it often.
"to speak with impeccability is to speak from your highest self.
it means that you speak with intention & with integrity.
it means that your words are in alignment with what you say
you want to produce - your vision & your dreams.
everything you say produces an effect in the world.
everything you say to someone else
produces an effect in that person.
know that you are constantly creating something -
either positive or negative - with your words.
speak words that will build self-esteem & self confidence,
build relationships & build dreams -
words of affirmation, encouragement, appreciation, love,
acceptance, possibility & vision."
(c) i don't remember who...but someone kind and very wise.

nana nana na na!
so i drive... alot.
and really enjoy my time in the car.
i listen to good music,
brainstorm about design projects,
catch up on phone calls with friends,
get lost & explore new areas, etc.
however, it does get frustrating
when you run into a road jerk.
and boy can the fingers fly!
but i've come up with a different plan.
i stick my tongue out.
seriously.
and here's the thing - it works.
(and keeps me off the 10 o'clock news)
try it sometime.

when i need a change
and a little pick me up,
i watch this clip (on repeat):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF-KagTq7qY
because there is something so magical
about a public display of expression.
it is the sense of humanity
that makes me feel alive.
a friend of mine shared this clip with me yesterday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UE3CNu_rtY&feature=player_embedded
i have a smile on my face and tears in my eyes.
talk about a beautiful thing.
